What a year! Anyhow, as any other person trapped, being trapped in my flat meant I had A LOT of time to be alone and spend (mostly) with myself. Being a movie enthusiast (and fan of the legendary critic Roger Ebert), decided to bootstrap this blog talking about the favorite movies of the past year. That is, movies I happened to watch (around 70?), not movies that were actually released during 2020, so be aware of that.
As I’m heavily into drama, I will mention my favorite drama films in another post.
BDSM: Secretary.
Romance: Chungking Express. The film is a romantic comedy, but definitely your typical Hollywood one with simple stories. Wong Kar-wai (of “In the mood for Love” fame) put his craft onto the works to depict love stories in the Chunking Market in Hong Kong (hence the name), through two stories: a young guy falling for a mysterious older woman, and, well, a young girl falling for an experienced, more serious police man. Romantic but really funny and interesting and well directed. I fell in love with the girl of the second story.
Horror: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The slasher film by excellence, directed by Top Hopper, which later spanned a franchise as well as many imitations (not to confuse with the failed modern remake). It is the story of a group of very relaxed young people on holidays, ending up in a farm with a very nasty family, including a guy with a human leather mask and a chainsaw. Gory but it also properly creates a really uncomfortable vibe. Lovely.

Special mention: Carnival of Souls. Indie, artistic horror film with very interesting photography. Reminiscences of the original “Twilight Zone”.
Classic: The Philadelphia Story. What can go wrong when using a superb, smart, elaborated script with Jimmy Stewart (of “Vertigo” fame) and Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn (of “Notorious” fame)? The story is about a tabloid reporter
Science-fiction: Ad Astra.
Western: The Searchers.
Film Noir: Chinatown.
Thriller: Rope.
